Asbestos Exposure is the leading cause of Mesothelioma cancer. It is estimated in the US that 9 out of 10 Mesothelioma cases are related to prolonged exposure to Asbestos. There are other unproven causes of mesothelioma. However, asbestos exposure is considered to be the leading cause of Mesothelioma.
How asbestos exposure cause mesothelioma
Like all cancers, Mesothelioma is caused by the mutation healthy cells into cancer cells. Studies show that this genetic mutation is initiated when asbestos fibers lodge in the lungs or other internal organs of the Mesothelioma patient.Asbestos is made up of tiny fibers. These fibers would then lead to the patient having either two types of Mesothelioma. When these tiny asbestos fibers work their way into the lung they irritate the pleura and may cause gene changes (mutations) that lead to the growth of cancer (pleural mesothelioma). Some of the fibres that have been breathed in can be coughed up and swallowed and is thought to be the cause of peritoneal mesothelioma.
Other causes of Mesothelioma
Aside from Abestos exposure, there are other agents believed to cause Mesothelioma cancer. The following are other causes of Mesothelioma aside from Asbestos Exposure:*Simian virus(SV40)from contaminated polio virus vaccines.
*Thorium dioxide (Thorotast)used in x-ray imaging.
*Zeolite a mineral found in Turkey.
However, the above causes of mesothelioma only constitute 10-20% of all Mesothelioma cases. Asbestos Exposure remains the leading cause of Mesothelioma cancer among patients.
